Everything you sell is a product in a group. The group decides where it appears; the product’s type decides which fields you get, because a downloadable license and a shipped parcel need different questions asked.

Before you start

  1. Decide the type. It sets the fields and cannot be changed casually afterwards.
  2. Have a group to put it in, or create one first — a product without a group is not orderable.
  3. Know the price in every currency you offer, or accept the converted rate.

Create it

  1. Open Settings → Products/Services.
  2. Press Create a New Group if you need one. Give it a name customers will understand — it is a heading in your store.
  3. Press Create a New Product.
  4. Choose the product type, pick the group, and give the product its name. The name is customer-facing.
  5. Save to create the product, then work through its tabs.
Duplicate rather than rebuild.

Duplicate a Product copies every field and price. For a second tier of something you already sell, it is faster and it will not miss a setting.

Pricing and billing

  1. Choose the billing cycle: one time, or recurring on a period.
  2. Enter the setup fee and the recurring amount for each currency you offer.
  3. A price left empty in a currency means the product is not sold in it — that is a decision, not an omission.
  4. Set Charge tax for this product if tax rules should apply. See Configure tax.
  5. Use Free trial or Bill pro-rata to a fixed day of the month only if you have decided how renewals then behave.

Variants, for physical products

A variant is a real, separately stocked thing — a size, a color — with its own SKU, price and stock level. Use variants when the difference changes what you ship. Use a configurable option when it does not.

  1. Define the option that varies, such as size, and its values.
  2. Generate the variant rows.
  3. Give each variant its SKU, price and stock. A variant with no stock is shown as unavailable rather than hidden.

How it looks in the store

  1. Add at least one image. A product card without one looks broken rather than minimal.
  2. Write the short description — it is what appears on the card and in quick view.
  3. Set the Button label if “Order Now” is wrong for this product; a donation should not say it.
  4. Mark it Featured only if you mean it. Everything featured is nothing featured.

The welcome email

Each product type has its own welcome template — Software Welcome Email, Membership Welcome Email, and so on. Choose the template on the product, and read it before you sell: the default text is generic and mentions things your product may not have.

Do not rename the template.

WBAMS looks these up by name. A renamed template is a welcome email that silently never sends. See Set up email.

Test it before customers see it

  1. Open the store in a private window and find the product where you expect it.
  2. Order it as a test customer, all the way through checkout.
  3. Confirm the invoice total, including tax and any setup fee.
  4. Accept the order and confirm the service appears on the account with the right status and next due date.
  5. Check the welcome email arrived and reads correctly.
  6. Then cancel and delete the test order.
